Honor chief advocates open AI alliance

LIVE FROM MWC SHANGHAI 2025: Honor CEO James Li (pictured) called for the creation of an open AI ecosystem, similar to the GSMA’s Open Gateway platform, in the form of an end-to-end alliance bringing together all stakeholders to develop standardised protocols and new business models.
In his keynote, Li said: “We cannot stand alone, and we cannot cope with the many challenges all by ourselves,” adding companies need to be part of an ecosystem to collaborate with partners to create a more open platform.
Li noted this is essential to quickly satisfy changing customers demands.
He claimed Honor is one of the only mobile devices that can connect to both Huawei and Apple’s operating systems, and also can connect with other brands to quickly transfer data.
Its platform uses AI to figure out ways to connect with other handsets and transfer documents and check data.
The CEO detailed the five levels of AI, suggesting the sector is currently in the middle between L2 and L3, caught between thinking and transforming to taking action.
To make AI an indispensable tool in our daily lives, Li said major challenges include overcoming information silos and opening up API infrastructure for an integrated ecosystem.
The move to artificial general intelligence or AGI, which offers human-level performance, is a long-term evolution he said, with various experts predicting it will take anywhere from five years to two decades.
Li also teased the launch of its fifth generation foldable Magic smartphone on 2 July, claiming the Magic V5 will be the thinnest foldable flagship model on the market.
